Micromedics Named as Tekne Award Finalist

Premier awards program recognizes Minnesota companies and individuals for technology innovation and leadership

St. Paul, MN, Sept 13, 2006 – Micromedics has been named as a finalist for a 2006 Tekne Award.  Minnesota’s annual Tekne awards recognize companies and individuals who have shown superior technology innovation and leadership.

The Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA) and Minnesota Technology, Inc. (MTI), in partnership with LifeScience Alley, join together to recognize technology innovators and leaders who have made lasting contributions to enhancing the quality of life and competitiveness of Minnesota. The awards are separated into both emerging and established company categories that recognize the best and brightest in the innovation, development, education, commercialization and management of technology.

“I am pleased that Micromedics was chosen as a Tekne award finalist in the Emerging Medical Device category,” said Curt Miller, CEO of Micromedics.  ”So far in 2006, Micromedics has introduced new medical products that range from biomaterials applicators to implants for use in ear, nose and throat surgery.  In addition, we continue to support the rapid market introduction of the EarPopperTM, a small, easy-to-use device that effectively treats middle ear pressure and fluid build-up. Considering the millions of adults and children who are treated with antibiotics for symptoms of fluid and ear pain, the EarPopper is an innovation welcomed by physicians and patients alike.  A recent NIH-sponsored study showed an 85% hearing restoration in children diagnosed with hearing loss from persistent Otitis Media with Effusion (fluid in the middle ear) – without the use of vent tubes or antibiotics.

The EarPopper and our other new produces demonstrates Micromedics’ continual drive to create and deliver products that improve patient health and respond to the needs and challenges of the clinical environment.”

Kate Rubin, president of MHTA stated that "Minnesota's Tekne Award finalists are recognized as experts and innovators in their fields. Because our state is privileged to serve as a home to many leading high-tech companies, it's an honor to be singled out and named Tekne Award finalist. It's companies like Micromedics that continue to make Minnesota a great place to live and work."

Wayne A. Pletcher, Ph. D., president & CEO of Minnesota Technology, Inc. added: “We are proud to honor Micromedics as a 2006 Tekne Award finalist and are pleased to recognize their leadership in the industry.”

The 2006 Tekne Awards will be presented on Thursday, October 26th at the Minneapolis Convention Center, beginning with a reception and silent auction at 4:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:00 p.m. and the awards ceremony at 7:00 p.m.

Fifty-one finalists have been named in 17 categories. A list of all finalists and categories can be found at www.tekneawards.org
